Pienaar runs up moral in London pre semis

  • SuggestedLeadIn: South African great Francois Pienaar and most of the 1995 World Cup winning Springbok team went on a jog through the streets of London with hundreds of fans on Saturday (24th October).

Script: The sleepy streets of London saw an unusual sight on Saturday morning as the 1995 World Cup winning South African rugby team and hundreds of fans took a jog through the city centre.

Led by legendary captain Francois Pienaar, the Springboks were reenacting the well-known jog the team took through the streets of Johannesburg on the morning of the 1995 final against the All Blacks.

It was at that final 20 years ago that Pienaar had been famously presented with the winning trophy by Nelson Mandela, and here in London, they gathered in front of the Nelson Mandela statue opposite Big Ben to sing the national anthem.

Meeting in Trafalgar Square, the group ran down Pal Mall, and Pienaar was thrilled with the turn out in the capital city:

SOUNDBITE (English) Francois Pienaar, South African rugby great:

"We thought there would be maybe 10, 20 people that's coming to run with the old men and this turn out is incredible."
While Pienaar might have replicated the feel good factor from 1995, as the Springboks face the reigning champions New Zealand today in an intense semifinal, we can only wait to see if they can replicate the result with a victory.
