South Africa have a "quiet belief" in RWC semi

Saturday, October 24 2015 by SNTV
  • South African flanker Schalk Burger says there is a "quiet belief" within the Springbok squad that they will cause an upset against New Zealand in their 2015 Rugby World Cup semi-final at Twickenham on Saturday.

"Yeah well I think the rivalry is unique. Obviously growing up in South Africa, my old man played against the (New Zealand) Cavaliers (which toured South Africa) I think in 1986 or whatever it was. So I obviously grew up watching South Africa playing the All Blacks, but again this is a massive game for us, the current crop and generation. But we're such a small part in the history between the two nations.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Johann Van Graan, South Africa assistant coach:

"We do play New Zealand quite a few times, so I think there is no surprises for both teams. Mentally the players have been brilliant, I think they are in a fantastic headspace. Everybody knows what's coming, everybody knows what our plans are for tomorrow, so one or two technical things that we might do differently, but again it's a new game, new stadium and a new day and it's about executing tomorrow."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Schalk Burger, South Africa back row:

"Well we have to, I think statistics prove that you know. I think Richie McCaw has won more Test matches than I've played almost. So it's pretty hard to compete against guys who never seem to lose. So again they are a great side, but I think within our team there a quiet belief, that we've put them under pressure in the past. Tomorrow is a massive occasion, so you can never quite precisely prepare how a team is going to react in certain circumstances.

Obviously there is a lot of pressure, but up until now we've covered every base, we've done everything we can on our part, now it's up to us as the players. We've got to go out there and embrace the moment, Twickenham is a phenomenal venue and we've got to draw energy, there is going to be a lot of South African support and we've got to try and put them under pressure."
