McCaw: SA will be "desperate" to win

Saturday, October 24 2015 by SNTV
  • New Zealand's Richie McCaw expresses a desire to "get stuck in" and warned South Africa would be "desperate" in their 2015 Rugby World Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Richie McCaw, New Zealand captain

"I think the excitement of getting to a semi-final and that word gets thrown around a lot, but there is genuine desire in wanting for tomorrow to come around, to get stuck in. But we realise the challenge the Springboks are going to pose, they are going to be desperate and we've got to match that. It will be brutal because of that and the teams that can, or the team that can I guess deal with that and play the rugby and take the moments on offer will be the one that succeeds."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ian Foster, New Zealand assistant coach (On facing South Africa)

"We know them well, they know us well and I would just say when you go into a big game like this, we know it is going to be brutal, we know that these games are extremely physical and I think that the first focus is not on trying to be clever, it's on trying to master your basics. When you are under that sort of physical pressure and it's a big stage, the key is mastering the basic stuff we do and then if there is any clever stuff we'll wait and see, then that will be as a consequence of us doing the basic fundamentals of our game well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Richie McCaw, New Zealand captain (On coming up against Schalk Burger)

"Schalk Burger is a guy that I have been lucky enough to play against for many years and he's the epitomy of the physicality that the Springboks bring. I relish those opportunities and tomorrow is another opportunity and if we never get to do it again, well I wouldn't mind making this one to remember, so that's how I am looking at it. But as I said it tests you right out, that's why it is called a Test match, they're the moments I enjoy and as I say he's a man I respect hugely, but I want to get one over him."
