MUST WATCH: Klopp: I am the normal one

  • Jurgen Klopp described his new role as Liverpool manager as the "biggest honour I can imagine" at his first press conference on Friday (9th October).

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager:

"Well, first of all I have to say sorry for my English, but usually now I'm on holiday. But since a few days, I've known that I'll be back in the race and I can say it's the biggest honour I can imagine to be here. For me one of the biggest clubs in the world and (to be) given this opportunity to try to help in a situation that's not so difficult, like all the people in this room feel, I think. It's not the perfect moment, of course, but I feel it's a good moment to come here, so I feel really proud."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager:

(Question - What attracted you to the challenge at Liverpool?)

"The intensity of the football, how the people live (for) football in Liverpool, around Liverpool, all Liverpool fans all over the world. So it's not a normal or usual club, it's a special club, and I've had two very, very special club's with Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund, and in this role it's the perfect next step for me to be now here and, yes, try to help."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager:

(Question - What do you make of the transfer policy at Liverpool? There has been a lot of criticism surrounding the transfer committee)

"Yeah this is a really crazy discussion (when) I heard about it, because it was not a problem for 10 seconds. Yes we talked about it, of course, but I'm not an idiot, so I don't want to be...no, I won't say the same thing like yesterday. For me it's enough that I have the first and the last word. In the middle of these two words we can discuss about anything. It won't take too long a time because we only want to discuss about very good players and it's discussing on the highest level, I hope so. And that's all that we have to do. I'm not a genius, I don't know more than the rest of the world. I need the other people to get the perfect information, and when we get this we will sign a player, or sell a player, or whatever. But it's really easy to handle this."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager:

(Question - When Jose Mourinho came to England to manage Chelsea he described himself as the 'Special One'. How would you describe yourself?)

"I don't want to describe myself, the only thing I can say, maybe (is) 'does anyone in this room think that I can do wonders?'. No? So let me work. I'm a totally normal guy, I came from Black Forest, my mother is maybe sat in front of the television watching this press conference and understanding no word until now. But she is very proud. I am totally normal guy. I'm the 'Normal One' maybe, if you want this. I was a very, very average player and I became a manager in Germany with a very special club - who has never been to Germany and watched Mainz 05, try to do it, try to take a ticket, it's real special there. And then I had a great opportunity to take Dortmund. Very special club, great club, after seven years I think for both parties it was the best (for me) to leave. And now I'm here and I hope to enjoy my work. I hope, because all the people told me so much about the British press, so it's up to you to show me that they're all liars."
