Scotland head coach admits players lack confidence

  • Following South Africa's 32-16 victory over Scotland in their Rugby World Cup Pool B match on Saturday (3rd October), Scotland head coach Vern Cotter admitted that his players had been punished for their slow start, while South Africa head coach Heyneke Meyer praised the Springboks' "clinical" performance.

SOUNDBITE (English): Vern Cotter, Scotland head coach:

"I think the score is a pretty fair reflection of the game. We were dominated in their contact area and we struggled to move forward. When you don't move forward in this game it becomes difficult. We were being pushed behind the game line at times. In the second half I thought the players stepped up and started matching the intensity at ruck time and we got a little bit more go forward, so it was a better second-half performance."

SOUNDBITE (English): Vern Cotter, Scotland head coach:

    Q. Is there any reason for Scotland's slow starts during this World Cup?

"We'll be finding out why we don't seem to have the confidence to start well. We just need to develop that confidence to put our game in place ruthlessly at the start . It's something that will be talked about this week."

SOUNDBITE (English): Heyneke Meyer, South Africa head coach:

    Q. Have South Africa gone back to basics since the game against Japan?

"I think going back to basics is sometimes a cliché. What are basics? I thought we were clinical. When we mauled we had the maul, we also played some good rugby. I thought Fourie (du Preez) was brilliant as a captain for the first time, kept the guys calm, we played a few phases when we took the right decisions to exit. We were a little bit under pressure at one stage when they (Scotland) came back, but getting back to the right game plan, slot one long penalty and we got momentum again. I thought (it was) a clinical performance, it wasn't easy as Scotland are a quality side. Once they go forward they are really dangerous and I think the defence did really well just to keep them down to one try (scored by Tommy Seymour)."
