Rugby World Cup: Scotland vs USA post-match reaction

Monday, September 28 2015 by SNTV
  • Vern Cotter believes Scotland should take some self-belief from their opening two rugby world cup games.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mike Tolkin, USA coach (assessment of the game)

" We really got some good momentum playing direct and went in (at half time) with the lead. Coming out, we knoew it was really important to come out of the clubhouse and establish ourselves, get territory and just the opposite happened. And after that happened, we seemed to be constantly playing from penalties or playing out of our own end and it became really difficult, frustrating. At key moments, we dropped balls. That second half was very frustrating."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Wyles, USA captain (on whether the score was a fair reflection of the game)

" I don't really think it is harsh. Our discipline let us down. We simply weren't good enough in the second half "

SOUNDBITE: (English) Vern Cotter, Scotland coach (on the game)

"So hats off to the guys. They worked hard. It was a four day turnaround for the Test match so we will once again be looking at how we come out of this because in six days time, we play another game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Vern Cotter, Scotland coach (on how happy he can be with the 10 points from two bonus-point wins)

" We've played some reasonable rugby and we've adapted when situations have been difficult so I think the guys can start taking a little bit of self-belief through to the next two games."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Vern Cotter, Scotland coach

"We need to grow that self-belief which is important, but we'll never ever get ahead of ourselves. That's never going to be the way that this team operates but there are some good things. We need to, once again, build on those good things. Develop them. repeat them. And we know that the next challenge (South Africa) will give us a fair indication of where we have to get to and what we have to do."
