Canada coach Kieran Crowley says they're disappointed and shattered after being beaten by Italy 23-18 in Pool D at the Rugby World Cup.

"Yeah, we're pretty disappointed to be honest. Shattered actually. I thought our guys gave it everything they could. They certainly played with some real emotion and some real energy, but in the end it wasn't quite good enough. To get that result as we came here to win, and we didn't win. If we had more games at this sort of level we'd certainly be able to manage them a little bit better because when you look at it, we had 59 per cent possession I think it was. We need to learn how to turn that dominance into points. So yeah, happy with some real aspects of it, but really disappointed with the actual result."

"If we had 23 guys dressing today that played 30/40 games a year I don't think things like that would happen. I think we would be ready for it. But when we're only getting a few games a year it's too easy to switch off. Eighty minutes is a long time and if you're not used to it, things like that are going to happen."

"When the dust settles we'll take some real positives out of it. I thought our set plays were very good, our scrum and our lineout. We'd done some analysis obviously on Italy. I think for the majority, except for one slip up which cost us big time, we certainly nullified what they brought to the table. So, there's some real positives that the work we did bore fruit."
