  • England name team ahead of the eagerly-awaited Rugby World Cup Pool A clash versus Wales

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster, England head coach:

"I think once we heard about JJ's (Jonathan Joseph's) injury, as probably you did, we've got lots of options and combinations we could have gone down. We've gone down this route, and I say this route in relation to the matchday 23, because we believe the team we've picked will give us the…. the best chance to get the foothold in the game and playing well, playing against this, what's going to be a very strong Welsh defensive team. And, obviously confident in (fly-half) Owen's (Farrell) ability to come on and play well. I think his contribution, in the Fiji performance, two tries, was excellent. He's obviously a high-quality player, a British Lion. And (fly-half) George (Ford) will play a different role, obviously potentially from the bench this week."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster, England head coach (on Sam Burgess):

"Sam obviously comes in. It's a big, big game for him, coming in at 12. But again, I think he's more than proven in the last three months he's capable of playing at this level. He's not got the international rugby union experience, but he's got the big game experience of what's going to be a big game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster, England head coach (asked if selecting Sam Burgess in his starting team is a gamble):

"I don't think it's a gamble. People said at the start it was a gamble to put him in the 31-man squad and I think, day-by-day, week-by-week he's begun to prove people wrong, and all we can do is judge what we see, in front of us, and we've got to select on the back of it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster, England head coach (on leaving out centre Henry Slade):

"A game against Wales, in my experience now, is like no other, in terms of the intensity and the…. the pressure that builds around it and you can layer on another ten per cent into this game - obviously more than that probably because it's a World Cup, 50 per cent, 100 per cent - because it's such a big game. So, I think, Bradley's (Barritt)…. big game experience, but also international experience at 13 and doing it for us in games like New Zealand, Australia, probably just gave him the edge. But it was a very tight call."
