England's Wood looks ahead to World Cup opener with Fiji

  • England flanker Tom Wood on Thursday said there was "no entitlement and no guarantee" that the host nation would win the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Tom Wood, England flanker (Q: It's an opening game of a World Cup, there is an obvious danger that it can inspire both teams?)

"It's going to be a great occasion, we've had a glimpse of some of the build up and the stadium looks fantastic and everything else. It can work either way can't it, the emotion can get the better of you and you can find yourself forcing things and getting carried away or it can inspire you to deliver the performance of your life. I guess when you go out you prepare for the worst case (scenario), the Fijians to be on top of their game, trying things from everywhere and that ball sticking and we've got to be prepared for that and make sure that we pressure them to an extent that they can't sustain it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Tom Wood, England flanker (Q: How do you stifle Fiji's offloading game?)

"Collective pressure. If you race up individually and you've got one guy with loads of energy and the others watch him do it, then he'll probably get stepped and all his energy will be used against him. You need that next guy following up, you need a guy either side that if somebody steps with no momentum then they get cleaned up in a big tackle and the breakdown is under huge threat and they've got slow ball and they're on the back foot. Fiji on the front foot with a running game, with the ball in wide channels, are an incredibly dangerous team. I guess what we've got to do is see how they react to a game on the back foot with stodgy ball that they suffer to create off."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Tom Wood, England flanker (Q: England haven't won the Six Nations since 2011, what convinces you that it will be different in this World Cup?)

"I don't know, we're not entitled to win it. There are some great teams out there and I can't promise you success, but all I can say is that we've left no stone unturned in terms of our preparation. From one to fifty really, the initial squad that started out have absolutely given themselves to the core, have handed themselves over, put themselves through absolute torture in the gym and in the field, committed to making each other better and I feel ready, I feel prepared. I hope that those lessons that we've learned over previous Six Nations campaigns will stand us in good stead and we'll manage the hype and expectation and all that comes with that on home soil as best we can. But I am humble enough to know that there is no entitlement and no guarantee, the bounce of a ball can be a cruel thing or a refereeing decision that doesn't go your way, so we have to give ourselves the best possible chance, each and every game."
