England have a tough group- Robinson

Saturday, September 19 2015 by SNTV
  • Mike Ford said his son George would be nervous ahead of England's opening 2015 Rugby World Cup game with Fiji on Friday (18th September), while former England winger Jason Robinson, a World Cup winner in 2003, gave his thoughts on the tournament.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Jason Robinson, former England winger (Q: How would you rate England's chances?):

"I think we've got a really good English team and I thing the fact it's on home soil will give us an advantage and probably more so because we have a younger team. That said we've got a very difficult group with Fiji first up, everybody thinks it's going to be a forgone conclusion but they've got some real good attacking players and then we go onto Wales and Australia who, you know, certainly it's not going to be easy. So we've got a very tough group to get out of and let's fact it, England have to finish top of the group because if you finish top of the group, you've got an easier ride and hopefully we'll be looking at Ireland in the semi-final."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jason Robinson, former England winger (Q: Are New Zealand the team to beat in this World Cup?):

"yeah, definitely. They are the bookies' favourites and they are the most consistent team in world rugby. But this is a World Cup and we've seen in previous World Cups there are upsets along the way. They've got an easier pool than pool A but at the same time they've got to get that consistency as well. You know, they will probably face France, maybe France in the quarters and we know how that's gone in the past."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jason Robinson, former England winger (Q: Who do you think are the main contenders outside New Zealand?):

"Well you've got England, you've got Ireland, you've got Wales, Australia, South Africa, you've got New Zealand, Argentina, France. All those teams have the potential to beat each other. We've seen over the last five or six weeks in the games that have been played, you know, Australia have beaten New Zealand and then New Zealand beat Australia, Argentina beaten South Africa. So you just never know how these games are going to go and it's all about the big occasions, holding your nerve, making sure you don't panic, you go out there and just try and play your normal game. There is a lot of pressure and pressure can affect players in lots of different ways. It can either make you freeze and crumble or it can inspire you to go on and do great things."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Ford, Bath Head Coach (Q: Your son George starts at outside half ahead of England's opener...):

"I think he'll be excited, you know he'll have butterflies but he won't be nervous in terms of what's going to go on out on the field because he's been preparing for this all his life and no matter what he's done, no matter what challenge, no matter what level he's played at, he's just stepped up to that level. He's played now Autumn (internationals) he's played Six Nations, this is the next step for him and he'll be massively looking forward to it and I expect him to do what he's always done."
