  • England's George Ford reflects on the hosts' 35-11 defeat of Fiji in the Rugby World Cup opener at Twickenham.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) George Ford, England outhalf (Q: How crucial was the bench tonight in terms of fresh legs?)

"Yeah, I think so, yeah. I think our bench is a massive weapon for us. Obviously, we though we'd be fitter than them in the last 20 (minutes). I think you could see that in terms of the intensity we played at, the speed of ball we got and the points we scored at the back end of the game. We talk about that a lot, whoever we're playing against, that, you know, wear them down in the first 60, try and get a bit of a lead and bring our bench on and... bring us on a little bit, really."

SOUNDBITE: (English) George Ford, England outhalf (Q: The scrum struggled at times, how did it affect the back line with backfoot ball?)

"Oh, obviously you... as a back line, you can't run the stuff you want to off a scrum that's not as dominant, but you know, the scrum's been unbelievable. Ever since I've been playing here, that lads have put in a massive shift week in, week out. They (Fiji) are unbelievable lads, they work very hard and, you know, fix it up. There were some brilliant scrums out there on our side too, so we'll look to get better, obviously, set-piece-wise, but running moves off the back of it as well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) George Ford, England outhalf (Q: How much of a step up will it be against Wales?)

"Well, I think they are going to bring a huge physicality to the game, Wales... They will look to pressure us, I think, with their kicking game. I think ultimately against Wales it's about being composed, it's about getting the basics right, I think they will be doing exactly the same thing to us. I don't think there will be too much for them to pick out of the game tonight, because it was a little bit 'stop-start'. Like I said, there wasn't much momentum to it, in terms of our attacking stuff, so look, it's going to be a massive game next week. We're looking forward to it already."
