Australian Rules Football coach Phil Walsh has died from stab wounds following a domestic dispute at his home in Adelaide, Australia on Friday. He was 55.

Phil Walsh, the coach of the Australian Football League's Adelaide Crows, has been found stabbed to death at his home.

South Australia Police officers had been called after a domestic dispute in the early hours of Friday.

Walsh was treated for knife injuries but died at the scene.

His 26 year-old son Cy was arrested shortly afterwards at a friend's home in a nearby suburb and detained on murder charges.

SOUNDBITE (English) Superintendent Des Bray, South Australia State Police:

"There'd been an argument, I can't tell you anything about the argument or the circumstances of that, but as a result of that, both Mr. Walsh and his wife received the wounds and the wounds that ultimately caused Mr. Walsh's death."

Walsh was 55. His wife, Meredith, was hospitalised with injuries which are not being regarded as life-threatening.

A knife allegedly used in the attack was found at the scene, but so far, officers are unable to speak to Cy, as is undergoing psychiatric assessment in hospital.

"The investigation is in its infancy and obviously Mr. Walsh has died. We can't speak to the son at this stage and obviously his wife is receiving treatment. So, as the investigation unfolds I'm sure we will find out exactly what happened, but at the moment I can't tell you that, and it would be inappropriate for me to speculate on what may or may not have happened."

Australia has been left in shock.

By noon, a steady flow of tributes were being left at the doors of the Adelaide Football Club headquarters, where fans paused to pay their respects.
