Panathinaikos charging towards Champions League qualification

Friday, May 29 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Panathinaikos moved a giant step closer to winning the Greek Super League play-off with a 1-0 win at PAOK on Wednesday (May 27).

    Script:

Two wins out of two coming into Wednesday's Champions League round robin playoff, Panathinaikos were in good shape to take the final spot in Greece for Europe's elite competition next season.

Top place takes the Champions League qualifiers spot, while second and third - currently occupied by opponents PAOK - and third by Asteras, enters teams into the Europa League.

And it was Panathinaikos who found the opener.

Stathis Tavlaridis with his first goal since January.

There was time for PAOK to respond just before half time.

However former Barnsley man Luke Steele made a sharp save.

Stelios Kitsiou came even closer for the home side, hitting the outside of the post shortly after the break.

In the 89th minute though, substitute Marcus Berg really should have settled the issue.

    That one goal proved enough.

A win from any of the three remaining games will see Pantahinaikos into next season's Champions League.
