There was a demonstration of the "Hawk-Eye" goal-line technology system in Berlin on Tuesday (26th May), ahead of its inaugural use in the German DFB-Pokal final this weekend.

SOUNDBITE (English) Laurence Upshon, Head of Football operations at Hawk-Eye:

"So the hawk-eye goal-line technology has seven cameras looking at each goal, fourteen cameras in total. They are mounted high-up in the stadium, back of the stands, on the roof, on the lighting gantry, on the catwalk. Image processing looks at the ball as soon as the ball crosses the goal-line, then it sends an alert to the match officials on the watch, the referee watch, but also on the communication system. So, they feel it and they hear it as well."

SOUNDBITE (English) Laurence Upshon, Head of Football operations at Hawk-Eye:

"We have to adhere to a license in which it is a tested system under a whole range of conditions, extreme weather conditions, match conditions. So, to have that license we have to pass all of these, so the technology is very reliable, we've been operating in the (English) Premier League for two seasons now and it's worked every single match, every single weekend for those seasons."

SOUNDBITE (English) Laurence Upshon, Head of Football operations at Hawk-Eye:

"So this is where all the processing happens, all the camera signals are transmitted back down to here, it looks (for) where (there) is a ball, what is not a ball, and as soon as the ball crosses the line, a signal is sent back into the stadium to the match officials, to their watch and to their headset."
