France set for Euro showdown

Saturday, May 23 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

The final weekend of the French Ligue 1 season will see three clubs battle for the two remaining spots in the table to qualify for European football next season. AS Monaco, Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne assess their prospects.

    Script:

£9.9m. That's how much is at stake this weekend in Ligue 1, as Monaco, Marseille and Saint-Étienne vie for Ligue 1's Champions League qualifier spot.

If the triumphant team win their play-off match next season they'll receive just under £1.4m, with Uefa writing out another cheque for around £8.5m for reaching the group stage.

As Formula 1 rolls into town, Monaco are in pole position.

Leonardo Jardim's men are two points clear in third and must win at already-safe Lorient to guarantee their place in the qualifiers.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim

"Lorient are a good team who play well and beat us in our first match this season. I think it'll be a difficult match. We need to be at our absolute best to win three points."

Marseille are two points further back in the Europa League qualifiers spot. Marcelo Bielsa knows their superior goal difference means victory at home to mid-table Bastia, and Monaco dropping points, should secure Champions League action.

Bielsa says it's the time of year which will define OM's season and playing European football is important.

As for fifth-placed Saint-Étienne they host Guingamp at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. In the Cauldron, Christophe Galtier must cook up three points and hope their rivals falter to dine at Europe's top table next season.

The 48-year-old believes his players have a ten per cent chance of finishing third and their odds of ending up fourth are one in two.

Galtier went on to say all of the pressure is on Monaco and Marseille because they're higher placed in the division.

In the city renowned for its production of coal, it remains to be seen whose European dreams go up in smoke.
