The defending champion had a double bogey six at the 11th as he added a round of 78 to his opening 71.

McIlroy missed a putt from inside two feet at the 10th, hooked his drive out of bounds at the next and then overhit a birdie on the 12th.

The 26-year-old showed signs of fatigue in his fifth successive tournament.

Last week McIlroy broke his own course record with a 61 at Quail Hollow en route to victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Englishman Justin Rose recovered from a double-bogey at the third to salvage a 72 and get back to where he started the day at one under.

Also through to the weekend is compatriot Luke Donald. The two-time winner carding a second successive 70 to finish four under.

Italian Francesco Molinari retained his two-shot lead after birdies at the last two holes in a 69 took him to 10 under.
