Borussia Dortmund defeated Bayern Munich on penalties in the German Cup semi-finals.

DFB-Pokal holders Bayern dominated the first half with 72 per cent possession and the Bundesliga champions made their supremacy count; ex-Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski scoring at the second attempt after centre-back Medhi Benatia's raking through ball. For FC Hollywood the match was going according to script.

But there was a twist in the tale when Dortmund levelled with only their second shot on target; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang squeezing the ball over the line.

Despite BVB being reduced to ten men in extra-time they held on to force a penalty shootout.

Keeper Manuel Neuer hit the bar to become the fourth consecutive Bayern player to miss from the spot and book Dortmund's place in the final.

A happy ending is still possible then for the departing Jurgen Klopp.
