The pictures tell a thousand words, this is where a group of Corinthians fans were shot and killed early on Sunday morning

The members of the Pavilhao Nove supporters club meet underneath a highway overpass in a dark and gritty building decorated somewhat by Corinthians colours.

Eight members gathered in the early hours of Sunday morning for a barbecue and to make flags for their team.

A group of armed men entered the facility and opened fire killing seven instantly, the eighth escaped but was chased down and killed at a nearby petrol station.

Pavilhao Nove was founded by a group of Corinthians fans with close ties to inmates of Brazil's infamous Carandiru prison, widely known for a massacre that left 111 inmates dead in 1992.

Detective Arlindo Jose Negrao ruled out that the attack could be linked to a rival fan group.

The police have refused to reveal the motive behind the violent murders, but local media believe that the incident is related to a turf war between rival drug dealers.

Corinthians football club declined to comment, simply posting the word 'mouring' against a black backdrop on its official Facebook page.
