Gloucester beat Exeter Chiefs 30-19 at Kingsholm on Saturday to reach the final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Exeter had the better of the early exchanges but Gloucester took the lead through a penalty from Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw.

But then Bill Meakes somehow beat two Exeter backs to grab James Hook's grubber kick and put Gloucester in front with Laidlaw's conversion making it 10-3.

Slade kicked a penalty for Exeter just before half-time, eventually closing the gap to just one point.

Inside the final 20 minutes, the home pack piled on the pressure and they were rewarded when Tom Savage crashed over to celebrate his birthday in style.

Laidlaw's conversion made it an eight-point lead and the scrum-half kicked another penalty shortly after to put Gloucester 11 points clear.

But Elvis Taione burrowed over his touchdown to give the visitors some hope.

Exeter threw the ball about in search of a winning try but Jonny May intercepted and raced into the corner to secure victory, and Gloucester will face Edinburgh in the final in May.
