Gatland discusses changes ahead of Italy

  • Intro:

Warren Gatland looks ahead to final Six Nations match with Italy but denies that front row injury problems could lead him to Adam Jones out of retirement.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach (on the changes to the starting line up and the substitutes bench from the win over Ireland)

"Well the two changes in the front row are pretty obviously in the fact that the two players are injured. So that makes that easy and then, with regard to a couple of places on the bench, when we looked at this game it's a case of picking a team that potentially may need to score a few points. So if we were playing for a Grand Slam and having to win by one point, then potentially some of the bench might be a bit different and the team might be different. But we've picked players that we think can come on and have an impact, give us some go forward, some real footballing skills so as we've done with this whole Championship, it's been about horses for courses and that's what we've done for this week."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach (on the selection of Gareth Davies as scrumhalf cover rather than Mike Phillips)

"Well I think one of the things about Gareth is he's got, if you look at his try scoring record, he's incredibly quick, he's scored some wonderful tries out of nothing for the Scarlets so he comes on and gives us something a little bit different and if we need him to come on and be able to run the ball and take the Italians on, that's part of the decision and why he was given that chance and opportunity."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach (dismissing a potential recall for Adam Jones despite injuries to both Gethin Jenkins and Samson Lee)

"If Adam hadn't retired. If Adam Jones wasn't retired from international rugby then he may very well be in the squad now. But as far as we're concerned now, he's retired so until he makes a different decision on that (it's irrelevant). So for us, we haven't even discussed Adam Jones because he's not in contention for us."
