  • Intro:

Newcastle United manager John Carver talks about Louis van Gaal, his Manchester United tactics and injury worries on the eve of the English Premier League clash on Tuesday.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) John Carver, Newcastle United manager (on current run of fixtures):

"It is daunting but I love a challenge. The players are up for the challenge. We have discussed it. We have discussed what we think is a reasonable target over the next few games, and hopefully we can achieve that."

SOUNDBITE (English) John Carver, Newcastle United manager

"I think that it is difficult for Man United fans because they have seen how entertaining (they were). They were always on the front foot. Going forward lots of crosses. Exciting football. It has changed slightly because the manager has come in and he has a different style. It's a patient build up. There's lots of possession. Lots of different systems which can sometimes be confusing. But the principles are still the same. He (Louis van Gaal) likes to keep possession. Likes to work the ball into wide areas and get the ball in the box. They are slightly different because it takes a little bit longer to go from back to front with them. But he does have that up his sleeve as well if he needs to use it - if he is chasing a game. There's nothing wrong with that. But he has a more patient style of play and I can see why the fans have a little bit of frustration with it. But it's a good way to play when you have technical players like he's got."

SOUNDBITE (English) John Carver, Newcastle United manager (on defensive injuries):

"I will have to start pulling rabbits out of a hat soon! But I don't really want to start thinking about it too much because when you start thinking about it - it actually happens. I am quite a positive person. And I shall deal with it when it happens - if it happens."

    Q. Do you still have to manage Ryan Taylor's work load given how much recuperation he has had to deal with?

"I think so. That's one of the other things is that we have got, from Saturday, Gabby Obertan been out a long time and come back. Ryan Taylor is the same. Sammy Ameobi has been out a few weeks and is coming back so we have got a few players who have been out a while, coming back in to play. So, we have got to manage those guys as well."
