Six Nations: North out for Wales

  • Intro:

George North will miss Wales' Six Nations trip to Scotland on Sunday with Liam Williams taking over on the left wing, says Wales coach Warren Gatland.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach:
(Q: Can you talk us through the thinking behind the one change to your team Warren?)
"Liam Williams has been playing very well. He was unlucky not to be selected for the first game (against England). We kind of ruled George (North) out, he hadn't been able to take a physical part in training this week, and it was a difficult selection for the first game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach:
(Q: Did you feel under any pressure at all to rest George after what was said and written after Friday night?)
Not really, I mean, we don't... we try not to let external pressures affect our decisions. But, you know, look, he's a young man and I said he was out for three or four weeks after (taking) a knock in the autumn, and the medics spoke to him and I spoke to him this morning and he's not a happy man, I can tell you that. He is disappointed that we have ruled him out. I've said to him this is not a rugby decision, this is a welfare decision about you and your longevity in the game. You've taken a couple of knocks on the weekend and the last thing you need, or anyone in the game needs, is you get another knock this Saturday. We don't need that in the game at the moment, so the precautionary thing is to make the positive decision about George and his welfare and the future and I think it's a very mature decision."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales head coach:
(Q: You have never lost to Scotland as Wales coach. How do you rate this year's Scottish group, with Vern Cotter in charge?)
"They are tough, you know, there was a game on the weekend where they've stayed in the game against France. I mean, France probably missed two or three scoring opportunities, but I think the scoreline was fairly similar to the last two times they played France, I think there's only been three points in it last year and the year before. It's going to be a tough game for us going up there. I think there's a 60 per cent chance of rain, looking at the long-term forecast. That will pose an interesting dilemma, if the rain comes. But we have got to get out there and get back on the horse and go out there and play well."
