Lancaster admits England 'feel pressure' ahead of Six Nations

  • Intro:

Including only nine members of the team which beat Australia in the autumn in the starting XV, England on Wednesday (4 February) revealed their side to face Wales in the opening match of the 2015 Six Nations Championship.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Stuart Lancaster, England Head Coach:
(On whether there is more pressure on himself or Wales coach Warren Gatland going into their fixture).

"Both sides want to have a good start in the Six Nations. You know, we lost our first game last year away in France, it was a huge game for us and unfortunately the balance of the ball didn't go our way that game. And we lost that first game but we maintained and improved our momentum and ended up with four good wins. So, you know, both sides, well all six sides all want to win in the first game. So I think both of us, I'm sure, would be feeling the pressure but also wanting to get that first win."

SOUNDBITE (English) Dan Cole, England Prop:
(On what it means to return for England away to Wales in Six Nations).

"Well, it's massive. I say, it's why you play the game. You know, I missed out last year in the final Six Nations games, and, you know, I've played in this game the fixture before, two years ago, four years ago on a Friday night - I think it was four years ago - and they're big occasions and as cheesy as it is, it's why you play the game, it's England-Wales, it's the traditional battle, it's the Six Nations, all that kind of stuff, it's... it gets the blood pumping talking about it, so, as I say, when you're playing it's something else."

SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan Joseph, England Centre:
(On where he and Luther Burrell will draw confidence from in the face of experience of Wales' pairing Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies).

"I think just the way we train, I think the way you prepare is massive when it comes to any rugby game, especially international rugby. And, you know, I think we've trained well this week and we've gained good understanding of, you know, what each other are about and we've obviously known each other before and we play against each other. But just getting that relationship and working with George (Ford) and the outside backs I think that's massive for us, and I think that's gone really well this week. And I think we can't focus too much on them and how many caps they've got (107), I think it's about sort of, you know, what we've done, what we've done this week and what we're building towards, and executing right on Friday."
