Wenger blames players in defeat

  • Intro:

Reaction from Arsene Wenger after Southampton beat Arsenal 2-0 in the English Premier League on Thursday (1st January).

    Script:

    Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager:
"It was a self-inflicted defeat. We had chances to win this game, and when we were in control we made the mistakes in our final third that allowed them to win the game. It's unfortunate, but we were much more in this game than a 2-0 defeat. We gave a lot and their 'keeper kept them in the game. We made mistakes at the back, but basically looked like we will be punished."

    Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager:
(Q: "What can you say about your goalkeeper?)
"Nothing. I don't want to talk about him."

    Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager:
(Q: "Were you surprised to see Szczesny bolting off his line like that?)
"Look, I don't want to make too much a case of it today. It's unfortunate, but it was a misunderstanding with (Laurent) Koscielny at the start. And after he should have stayed on (Sadio) Mane and not let him take the ball and run away from him."
