The hosts needed a win to move them level on points with the visitors.
It was a goalless first half with all the action coming when play resumed.
And it was Adelaide who drew first blood in the 67th minute.
Confusion in the Sydney defence as Sebastian Ryall's poor clearance allowed Bruce Djite to finish.
Looking for a way back, Sydney had a chance in the 78th minute, but goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic's save kept Adelaide in front.
Then three minutes later, it was game over.
Substitute Pablo Sanchez heading in James Jeggo's cross in the 81st minute as Adelaide led 2-0.
There was still time for another goal.
Adelaide carving apart Sydney's defence yet again with substitute Awer Mabil scoring from close range in added time.
It finished 3-0 to Adelaide who registered their seventh league win of the season and move up to second in the standings.
