The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne swapped the red of his Budget Box for the blue of Manchester City on Monday as the Premier League champions launched their new academy.

Ex-captain Tony Book and club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak were also at the unveiling of the £200m regeneration project in Eastern Manchester, funded by the Abu Dhabi United Group in partnership with Manchester City Council.

The building dubbed the English 'Milan Lab' by academy director Brian Marwood seeks to address the fact that not one English player developed by the club has started in the Premier League.

Patrick Vieira's Elite Development Squad will benefit from 2,000 trees to screen against wind and photographers, 16 outdoor pitches and a sports science, research and data centre.

After spending more than £50m in the last transfer window and in the climate of Financial Fair Play, City will hope to grow their own stars in the future.
