Squad depth pleases Allardyce

  • Intro:

Reaction from The Hawthorns after West Ham United beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the English Premier League on Tuesday (2nd December).

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Allardyce, West Ham United manager: (on the strength of the West Ham squad and their refusal to buckle under pressure).

"The strength in depth of the squad is what's paying off for us at the moment, because we've had to change the team again. Some by fatigue, some by injury and use the squad to its maximum again and in the end we've pulled off another victory. I say it wasn't great, particularly the second half, but it was resilient, we knew what we had to do and we did it, so having come back from 1-0 down, particularly away from home, was always a big task and to do it away from home and to do it the way we did, coming back in the first half by taking - after going a goal down - taking control of the game, so I was disappointed in the second half, I have to say, because I thought we were going to go on and create even more chances, but I have to say we defended right and defended well to secure the three points."

SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Allardyce, West Ham United manager: (on how good it feels to have 24 points from 14 games).

"Twenty-four points for us at this stage of the season is one hell of a total. Based on, if you look where we were this time last year, we were almost in the bottom three, I think."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alan Irvine, West Bromwich Albion manager: (on the frustration of dominating the second half without getting any reward and losing the game).

"I don't know if I've ever been involved in a more one-sided game, or one-sided half, when you don't get something out of it, you know. It was astonishing really that we had so much of the play, we spent the whole half in their half, if not in their final third. We had countless attempts at goal, but we didn't score, unfortunately and that's disappointing. In some cases our finishing could have been a little bit better, obviously in other cases they defended well, or we were a little unfortunate or the goalkeeper did well."
