Mordovia Saransk welcomed league leaders Zenit St Petersburg hoping to improve on their recent form that has seen them win three of their last four.

And they started brightly, a neat move playing Oleg Vlasov through on goal but he fired his shot wide from close range.

He made up for that miss just a few minutes later as he took advantage of Garay's heavy control, tackling the defender before breaking into the box, beating two men with a quick dribble and slotting home to give Mordovia the lead.

Zenit poured forward in the second half in search of an equaliser, Hulk proving to be the most dangerous threat on numerous occasions.

The Brazilian clever chip going just wide of the Mordovia goal in the 74th minute.

The home fans were in a buoyant mood and appeared unaffected by the temperature reaching -9 degrees celcius.

Hulk tried his luck again in the 75th minute with a shot from distance, but Anton Kochenkov was equal to it.

It proved to be the final chance of the match, Mordovia holding on to secure an historic 1-0 win over the leaders, three points that sees them move up into tenth in the league.
