Before Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United fought it out for a place at the top of the table, there was a moments silence for Australian cricketer Phil Hughes.

Hughes died on Thursday from injuries he suffered after he was struck in the head by a ball during a match on Tuesday.

Melbourne opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Adelaide's Nigel Boogaard knocked in Guilherme Finkler's free kick, netting at the wrong end to give the Victory a 1-0 lead.

Adelaide equalised through Awer Mabil just 7 minutes later.

Mabil, unmarked at the back post made no mistake in front of an open goal.

But two minutes later the Reds conceded yet another own goal when Sergio Cirio scored, Melbourne back on top at 2-1.

They made it 3-1 in the 32nd minute though. An unmarked Leigh Broxham heading in at the far post.

In the 36th minute, Adrian Leijer fouled Cirio inside the area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Marcelo Carrusca stepped up, and made no mistake, calmly chipping the ball straight down the middle.

Neither side scored in the second half, but in the 63rd minute, the crowd stood and applauded in memory of Phil Hughes, who was 63 not out at the crease when he was fatally injured.

Unbeaten Melbourne won 3-2 and move level at the top of the table on 18 points with Perth, Adelaide are one point behind in third.
