Stanton not playing for the money

  • Intro:

Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins formally announced Wednesday (19th November) their signing of Giancarlo Stanton to a 13-year USD$325 million contract, the longest in Major League history and the richest in North American sports history.

    Script:

"In terms of entrusting our scheme of things and our plans to win, that was my main focus in the meetings. I didn't want to talk about dollars and money, I wanted to talk about what's our plan, what are we going to do moving forward, and how are we going to change this make-up in Miami. Everyone wants to talk about the record-breaking deal and all that, that's for you guys to talk about. I want to have records on the field and do things on the field. That's what this is about, that's what making a push in Miami is about for me."

"This is isn't like a lottery ticket and peace out. People are thinking about it like that. You win the lottery and you quit your job and you go live wherever you want to live and you call it a day. Now this is a start of new work and a new job for this city. It's a huge responsibility and one I'm willing to take and I need to come into this as if I am drafted back in 2007 and I have work to do and things to progress and make this a huge step for the team."
