  • Intro:

Terry Venables believes that there is too much pride and history surrounding the Scotland England fixture for it to ever truly be a friendly international.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Terry Venables, former England manager (on the emotions surrounding Scotland v England games)

"Locally, and I mean UK wide, it's a great derby. It's like the biggest derby that you'll get in the terms of that locality. And the same as globally, it's like Barcelona and Real Madrid. That's the top, that's what you do not want to lose because it's just the biggest failure. You just can't get it off your back for maybe a couple of weeks."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Terry Venables, former England manager (on whether a Scotland v England match can ever truly be a friendly)

"No it can't. I mean it is surrounded this weekend by Scotland playing really well against Ireland. I thought that they were terrific. England now has points to go through and they're getting lifted and I think that it might be a chance for England to do something because I think that Scotland are just really happy with the way that they're doing and they're playing excellent."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Terry Venables, former England manager (on how both England and Scotland are placed in their Euro 2016 qualifying groups)

"Well they're placed really well and Scotland have got a really difficult group as well. I think England, we knew from the beginning that it's an easier one but you can't ever think about winning and losing, you have to think about giving everything your best because that's the only way that you're going to go forward and stretch yourself. It's no good relying on "oh we played well last time."
