Claudio Ranieri has been sacked as coach of the Greek national football team.

An embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to the Faroe Islands was the nail in the coffin for the 63-year-old Italian.

It left Greece sitting bottom of their European qualifying group, with one point from four games.

The president of the country's football federation Giorgos Sarris admits he was sorry for hiring Ranieri.

Sarris has taken full responsibility for the appointment, which he says has resulted in a poor image for the national team, especially after the defeat to the Faroe Islands.

Ranieri took over the role from Fernando Santos who led Greece to the knock-out stage of the 2014 World Cup.

The former Chelsea boss isn't short of experience - he has almost a thousand managerial career games under his belt.

Tuesday will be his last for Greece, when they take on Serbia in a friendly.
