Meyer announces Springbok's line-up

Thursday, November 13 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Heyneke Meyer makes five changes to his starting South Africa team for the England clash on Saturday (15th November) following the Springbok's loss to Ireland last weekend.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Heyneke Meyer, South Africa head coach:

"I never make a lot of changes after we've lost. I don't usually plan that in advance so that's not to say that those guys are the scapegoats, please I'm going to put it on record. Usually when we didn't play well and lose a game you try and keep the same team so they must go fix it. That's why I've kept the same 23."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Heyneke Meyer, South Africa head coach:

"Believe it or not you are going to lose games, even if you're South Africa. All credit must go to Ireland. We really focussed on our own game, we weren't happy, I thought actually it was one of those strange games where we won everything but on the scoreboard, but that doesn't count for anything. There was not complacency whatsoever, we always knew Ireland were a quality side. They were unlucky not to beat the All Blacks (in 2013). They're a quality side."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Heyneke Meyer, South Africa head coach:

"I think you're always nervous when you play England but I think you should put those nerves into excitement. You can't just play every single game and play with emotion, it must be excitement, you must be passionate to go out there and play for your country. Without giving out the wrong message you don't have to motivate the guys when they play England because they know it's a huge challenge and they know there's unbelievable heritage going back so many years and they know Twickenham is one of the most difficult places to play. This week I don't have to say anything. I don't have to motivate the players - I know they're going to be motivated."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Heyneke Meyer, South Africa head coach:

"It's just my observation but what happens now doesn't have a big influence on the World Cup. In a sense, it's almost better we've lost because now because the guys know they have to step up in a one off World Cup playoff - I'm not saying we must lose on Saturday, I'm just saying. You can't say because of one win now you've got an edge, it's going to happen next time. Then you get complacent. The World Cup is a total different thing."
