    Thousands of mourners on Saturday (1st November) attended the funeral of Senzo Meyiwa, South Africa's national football team captain who was shot dead last week.

    The funeral of Senzo Meyiwa took place on Saturday afternoon in Durban, South Africa.

    Meyiwa, the former goalkeeper and captain of the South African football team was shot last Sunday at his girlfriend's home in Johannesburg, in what was reportedly a robbery attempt.

    The funeral was held in Meyiwa's home town and attended by hundreds of people beyond family & friends.

    Passing of the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has brought the South African sporting family together, with many of Meyiwa's family, friends and team mates showing their emotion on a truly sad day in South African sport.

    South African officials on Thursday (30th October) called for a strict new gun law as a tribute to Meyiwa.

    And authorities said three suspects were involved in the break-in that led to Meyiwa's death.

    Suspect, 25-year-old Zenokuhle Mbatha, has been arrested and charged with murder, according to authorities said on Friday (31st October).

    One thing is for sure, the passing of a true character in South African sport is sure to live long in the memory of those who knew Senzo Meyiwa.
