MLS Commissioner Don Garber doing the formalities
SOUNDBITE (English) Don Garber, MLS Commissioner: " It is my pleasure to bring up Henry Nguyen to officially launch LAFC. And his partner here in Los Angeles, Peter Guber."
Nguyen and Guber envisage their new team playing somewhere in Los Angeles in early 2017 in a brand new stadium.
LAFC has no ties to Chivas USA, which was folded this week,
SOUNDBITE (English) Don Garber, MLS Commissioner: "Los Angeles is a big market. Lots and lots of people. Tremendous soccer history, a lot of soccer participants, a lot of folks who really love the game. And we believe our sport is going to grow with the same formula that drives football around the world, that is passionate rivalries, which is two buildings in the same vicinity and allow fans to sort of connect with their neighbourhood but align with a specific team brand. It didn't work with Chivas USA because the whole formula didn't make sense. That formula exists here.
LA Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson is involved in the LAFC group consisting of wealthy West Coasters connected to Guber, who also has ownership stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Golden State Warriors.
SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Guber, Entertainment Producer, LAFC Partner: " here is the point; The market is so big, and so diverse that captures the hearts and minds of people, is the size of the audience and the size of those hearts, and we think we can touch them. "
Los Angeles Football Club will be hoping to replicate the 4 Championships won by the LA Galaxy
