South African prosecutors announced on Monday that they would appeal against the verdict and sentencing of Oscar Pistorius, who was handed a five-year prison term after being convicted of culpable homicide.
The double-amputee athlete who competed at the 2012 Olympics in London, began his prison sentence on October 21st after he was acquitted of murder by Judge Thokozile Masipa, but found guilty of a lesser charge of culpable homicide for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home last year.
Under the current ruling Pistorius could be released from prison after 10 months and would have to complete his five-year term under house arrest.
The decision to go ahead with further court action means the athlete, known as 'Bladerunner', could still face a murder conviction and a much longer prison term for killing Steenkamp.
