Intro:
Fans are gathering outside the house where South African football captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot as police continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.
Script:
A nation in shock, at the loss of one their sporting stars, in his prime.
It was at this house in a township near Johannesburg that Senzo Meyiwa's life came to an untimely end during an attempted burglary.
Meyiwa was visiting his singer girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.
His friend Tumelo Waka Madlala was also with him in those final moments.
SOUNDBITE: Tumelo Waka Madlala, Meyiwa's friend:
"We were sitting together last night when two people burst in, they asked for our mobile phones and money. As they were running away we tried to stop them and that is when they shot him (Meyiwa) at point blank range."
Police broke protocol to announce the 27-year-old's death.
As the investigation continues.
Fans, like Modise Sdwaba, are gathering outside the house to pay tribute to the Orlando Pirates and South Africa national football team captain.
SOUNDBITE: Modise Sdwaba, Orlando Pirates fan:
"Losing young stars like this at the pinnacle of their career is not right."
The loss casts another spotlight on South Africa's high crime rates and problems with gun violence.
Police have called for calm as they search for the three assailants behind the attack.
They're offering a reward, but no money can place a value on the devestating effect the loss of Meyiwa will have on this nation.
