Oscar Pistorius was being portrayed as a "poor victim" ahead of his sentencing for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the chief prosecutor said on Tuesday in Pretoria, South Africa.

"Remember where we started? I said who is to blame? You said 'Mr Pistorius is to blame because he shot and killed the deceased'. Now you blame the media, how do you bring the two together?"

"As I referred My Lady I think it was just handled with a bit more respect in the media it could have been different for Mr Pistorius."

SOUNDBITE (English) Gerrie Nel, prosecutor:

"So you say if the media said that he fired four shots through the door well knowing that there is somebody in the door and that he didn't subjectively foresee the possibility that he could kill somebody but objectively the reasonable man would have, the people would have still invited him to address big platforms after he has killed someone?"

"My lady, I can confirm that there are still people out there that have actually wanted Mr Pistorius to tell his story of motivation and inspiration to the world."
