Saudi Arabia train ahead of Uruguay match

Thursday, October 09 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

The Saudi Arabia football team trained and spoke in Jeddah on Tuesday (7th October 2014) ahead of their friendly match at home to Uruguay on Friday (10th October 2014).

    Script:

The Saudi football team continued their training for their two international games in four days against Uruguay and then Lebanon four days later.

The matches are in preparation for the coming Gulf Cup which will be hosted by the Saudis in November this year - and the Asian Cup which will be held in Australia in January 2015.

They have won the Asian Cup three times before, in 1984, 1988 and 1996.

But in recent years have failed to thrive at the Championship - or to qualify for the World Cup.

They have missed out twice in a row, in 2010 and 2014, after playing in the final four times in a row from 1994.

Former Anderlecht centre-back Osama Housawy said he knows the danger of the Uruguay national team:

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): Osama Housawy, Saudi centre-back

"If you want to be among the big teams, you have to play against big teams, we used to play against weak teams, and we never had a strong challenge, but against big teams is better. We played against Argentina in Riyadh, and we drew nil-nil, and no one expected us to gain have a positive result."

It is likely that the match will feature Luis Suarez for his first appearance for Uruguay since biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Suarez has only played in a youth game and a friendly for Barcelona this season.
