Panathinaikos leave it late to defeat Panionios

  • Intro:

Following an impromptu appearance from the stadium sprinklers mid-way through the second half, a late shower of goals handed Panathinaikos a 2-1 win over Panionios in Athens.

    Script:

The first half of the Greek Super League clash between Panathinaikos and Panionios proved fairly unremarkable.

In the fourth minute, Panionios goalkeeper Nikos Giannakopoulos did well to keep the ball in his area when he rushed out to take care of a speculative ball forward.

The second half started much like the first - both teams probed without ever looking threatening.

The first real highlight of the match came in the 72nd minute.

With Panathinaikos in possession, the stadium's sprinkler system activated and forced play to stop for a short period while the problem was fixed.

The game seemed to spring into life after that and towards the end of the match, the goals started raining in.

Boumale put the visitors ahead with five minutes to go, latching on to a rebound on the half volley from the edge of the penalty box.

Substitute Abdul Ajagun drew the home side level a minute into added time, although he did look fractionally offside.

The dramatic winner came in the fourth of five added minutes, Mladen Petric jumping high enough to head the ball past Giannakopoulos and securing Panathinaikos' first win of the Greek Super League season.
