Reaction after racist taunts were chanted towards Santos goalkeeper Aranha in 2-0 win against Gremio in Copa do Brazil match.

Aranha said the fans chanted racist slurs behind his goal toward the end of Santos' 2-0 win at the Arena Gremio in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Television images appeared to show a woman yelling "monkey" from the stands.

Aranha complained and the match was briefly interrupted. He made monkey gestures as he talked to the referee.

At one stage he turned toward the fans and touched his right arm, saying "I'm proud to be black."

The goalkeeper later said the taunts "hurt" and he hoped "this is a warning so it doesn't happen again."

Gremio coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was ejected from the field at half-time for complaining to the referee.

"Last time I played (a match here) for Copa do Brasil, the big screen was showing an ad for a campaign against racism. Not without a reason for that. Not without a reason. I was at my goal post… Having fans shouting, cursing, it is a normal thing. But when they started with racist chants… 'You stinky nigger!', 'You nigger!' , "You all are a bunch of nigger!'… I got nervous but I could still handle it. But when they started to chant 'Monkey!'… They did it quickly and only a couple of times so the camera could not catch it."
