There were mixed emotions among fans leaving the stadium following a tense World Cup final that came down to a few moments of individual skill.

Mario Goetze scored the goal that gave Germany its fourth World Cup title in its eighth final, and left Argentina star Lionel Messi still walking in the shadow of his compatriot Diego Maradona, who led his country to the 1986 title.

Scuffles broke out as Argentina fans left the stadium and tensions were running high when a group of Brazilian fans started taunting supporters of their biggest rivals.

It was a different story for Germany's fans, however, who left the stadium singing and dancing.

It is Germany's first World Cup title as a unified nation, having won as West Germany in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

Later in the night riot police were called upon to disperse a large group of Argentina fans who were blocking streets near Rio's Copacabana neighbourhood.

They were forced to use pepper spray in an attempt to get them moving, and even threatened to fire tear gas before fans started to vacate the area.
