Belgium seek revenge for '86

  • Intro:

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots, plus defenders Jan Vertonghen and Daniel van Buyten look ahead to their World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

    Script:

Belgium are in the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 28 years but their coach Marc Wilmots is not satisfied with that.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Marc Wilmots, Belgium coach (on not settling for just reaching the World Cup quarter-finals):

"I am not here to celebrate, I am here to win matches. That is our goal, and being second-best doesn't interest me. We have to change the Belgian mentality of celebrating quickly when we have something. We can celebrate when we have the title or when we are in the final four. But not now."

Standing in their way of a place in the semi-finals are Lionel Messi's Argentina. Somehow stopping him and their other attacking options would give Belgium a good chance of going through.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jan Vertonghen, Belgium Defender (on stopping Lionel Messi):

"We have very good defenders. We have guys who have played against (Lionel) Messi several times and (Angel) Di Maria and (Gonzaolo) Higuain, so we'll find a way. We have confidence in the manager and he'll find a way and he will tell us how to stop him."

The game is a repeat of the 1986 semi-final, that was Belgium's best World Cup finish but defeat in that match to Argentina is even on the minds of the second golden generation.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Daniel van Buyten, Belgium defender:

(on watching Belgium play Argentina in the 1986 World Cup semi-finals)

"I was in front of my TV, and it thrilled me as much as all of Belgium. It was an exceptional run for Belgium. Now we are trying to rewrite history and play in the semi-final again and at the same we have an opponent who beat us, and we will give it our all."

Should they win they will face either Costa Rica or their neigbours Netherlands for a place in their first ever World Cup final.
