Mud and mayhem ruled at the Swamp Soccer World Cup in Blairmore, Scotland over the weekend.

With the FIFA World Cup well underway in Brazil, Blairmore in Scotland played host to an altogether different type of football - the bizarre but growing sport of swamp soccer.

Originating from the swamps of Finland - where players found it to be an excellent way of training for cross-country skiing - swamp soccer tournaments are now held across the globe.

Sixteen teams from around the world congregated at the weekend to compete for the sport's ultimate crown - the Swamp Soccer World Cup.

Matches last 24 minutes and each team consists of six players but sides can draw on an unlimited supply of substitutes throughout the match.

Bizarrely, players are prohibited from changing their shoes during the game, but other than that the rules are much the same as for normal football, as the organiser of the Swamp Soccer World Cup, Stuart Miller, explained:

"The rules are very similar to normal football, the only thing is because it's not as serious we don't bother with offside and because of the mucky conditions the ball is dropped on a foot to start anything like a throw in or a penalty or kick off."

Open to anyone over the age of 17 - male or female - the teams don't take themselves too seriously.

Unathletico Mudrid and Mudchesthair United were among this year's World Cup crop.

As the two-day tournament drew to a close in bright sunshine, a winner finally emerged from the mud in the mixed team final.

In a hotly contested match, Turkish outfit Erisim Instanbul lost 4-3 on penalties to the Yipee Ki Yay Mucky Fudders, whilst in the men's final, local talent Team AKA beat fellow Scottish side Deportivo Lack of Talent by three goals to one.

Team AKA celebrated their World Cup success with - what else? - a final dive through the mud.
