Manaus tribes bring the party to the Amazon

  • Intro:

A look at how the World Cup is affecting the life of an indigenous tribe in the remote north.

    Script:

Thirty kilometres (18 miles) upriver from Manaus, perhaps the most exotic World Cup host city, lies the remote village of Sao Joao do Tupe, a small indigenous community tucked away on a bend of the mighty Amazon River.

Here, the Dessana people live a life of fishing and making trinkets for sale to tourists who come from the big city to the east.

World Cup fever has made it as far as these Amazonian outposts.

And with the attention to detail it's clear the locals sees this as a chance to make a profit from the tourists.

"For us, the tribe of Dessana, it's a very big opportunity for us to take advantage of. To show many people from around the world who don't know us. So it's a big opportunity."

Locals watch the games on the village's only television, brought in by German-born Cristian Kornfelder, who visited the village in 2010 and stayed on after marrying local lady Namini.

This small tribe, the nearest indigenous tribe to the city of Manaus, is hoping that the World Cup footfall extends to one of the most peaceful corners of the Brazilian rainforest.
