  • Intro:

An exhibition of football shirts that includes a Nazi-era strip is raising eyebrows among visitors to a busy shopping mall in the Brazilian city of Salvador.

    Script:

This football shirt is causing controversy. It's among over 100 shirts at an exhibition in Salvador. It is a nazi-era germany kit .

SOUNDBITE (German) Rolf Zettel, Swiss fan:

"Is this a joke? Germany 1934, a despicable time."

    reporter: "Is this t-shirt OK?"

"Is this okay? No it's not OK."

In Germany, displaying swastikas is illegal but the owner of the collection has defended its inclusion and says it has been endorsed by the local World Cup organising committe and therefore has the consent of FIFA.

SOUNDBITE (English) Duda Sampao, shirt collector:

"People are very interested (in replica 1934 German shirt with swastika), they take a look and say 'oh I didn't see this (emblem) anymore and how could this happen? So we try to explain that it was a historical moment, that Germany was passing by the Third Reich, Hitler was rising from it, so people get that with no problem."

And away from that shirt there is some incredible pieces here such as a shirt worn by Socrates in the 1986 World Cup but most will probably leave here with one overriding memory.
