Workers at Rio de Janeiro's two airports began a 24-hour strike on the eve of the World Cup.

Unions representing check-in counter clerks, baggage handlers and janitorial staff voted to strike starting at midnight on Wednesday.

They have been demanding pay rises of at least 5.6 per cent for several months

The strike will affect the Galeao international airport and the Santos Dumont airport .
Galeao is expected to be one of the busiest during the tournament.

A union representative said only 20 per cent of workers would stay off for the full 24 hours. But this strike is just another example of the unrest in the country as the World Cup get underway.

It seems unions and workers who have suffered from several years of high inflation are taking advantage of the spotlight a World Cup brings to pressure their employers and the government
