  • Intro:

Dutch fan Ben Oude Kamphuis drives almost 21,000 kilometres from San Francisco in the United States to Praia do Forte in Brazil to watch his team play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

    Script:

This Netherlands supporter has driven over 20,000 kilometres to get to the World Cup in Brazil. He did it in this truck, which he calls Nellie, It's almost 60 years old.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ben Oude Kamphuis, Netherlands fan (Q:Tell me about your journey with Nellie?) "I've done, let me see, almost 21,000 kilometres with that engine. Like from San Francisco to here and no problems. it has every morning it has started, I went through the highest mountains, through the desserts, through the Amazon, the rainforest, she has never let me down. So I'm like…I have a special relationship with that old truck."

He made the decision to drive it from his home in San Francisco after a heartbreaking night in 2010.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ben Oude Kamphuis, Netherlands fan (Q: How did this idea come about to drive from San Francisco to Brazil for the World Cup?) "Four years ago when we, Holland, lost again in the final I was crying one more time - that's three times that I cried in the final, after the final. So I was telling my friends and family back in San Francisco 'you know what, I'm driving old Nellie to Brazil.'"

This time he's confident they can go one better.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ben Oude Kamphuis, Netherlands supporter (Q: How do you think the Netherlands will do in this World Cup?) "I think we are going to be champions, we have to. You've got to think big, you've got to have faith, trust, you know like all together. If I was to say that we are not going to make it, then why did I even do this? You know so for me it's like I'm going all the way, these boys are going to take it all the way to the final."

Why indeed, but at least he's got a back up should things go wrong.

UPSOUND: (English) Ben Oude Kamphuis, Netherlands supporter (With his model of the World Cup trophy) "This is what it is all about. Now I made this myself but it somewhat looks like legit. You know it is made out of rosewood and it's been in many peoples hands all throughout Central and South America."

Netherlands begin their campaign to get their hands on the real thing, when they face Spain on Friday.
