World Cup protest staged on Copacabana Beach

  • Intro:

FIFA World Cup spending protest takes place on Copacabana Beach on Tuesday (10th June).

    Script:

The Copacabana beach in Rio is usually packed with bikini-clad locals and tourists enjoying an iconic South American hotspot.

But on Tuesday a section of the beach saw an influx of oversized footballs in a demonstration against Brazil's hosting of the 2014 World Cup.

World Cup spending has been the main theme of protests that have been taking place throughout Brazil since last year, with a large section of the country believing the money should have gone towards public services, such as health, transport and education.

This specific protest was set-up by the organisation, Rio da Paz, and their founder explained the motivation behind the demonstration.

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Antonio Carlos Costa, NGO Rio da Paz founder:

"Today we are giving a voice to millions of Brazilians who agree with our message. For the World Cup to be staged in a country that has such dire poverty is a moral problem."

Brazil's World Cup opener against Croatia is two days away and whilst the World awaits the action on the pitch, it is feared that what happens off it, could end up being a far greater story.
