  • Intro:

2014 World Cup-bound referee Howard Webb said whilst he supports the decision to introduce goal-line technology at the Brazil World Cup for the first time, further technological implementations must not slow the game down. The tournament begins when the Seleção face Croatia in Group at São Paulo's Arena Corinthians on 12 June.

SOUNDBITE (English) Howard Webb, 2010 FIFA World Cup final referee (On introduction of technology in football)

"We will see, It's for the people to decide. But we need to be careful because the game is popular, you know? Thousands of people will travel to Brazil to watch the games in the stadiums, on big screens, they will watch the game on TVs all over the world and that's because the way it is played. It's a high tempo, fast flowing game, people like that as well. So, who knows where the game will go, but we need to be careful to not change the game too much. And any introduction of any assistance to the referee is something that doesn't change the game and it is positive."
